Yes, every TukTuk imported to the UK has to go through a strict safety and compliance test with VOSA called a Single Vehicle Approval after which they are issued with a Ministers Approval Certificate. This allows us then to get the car registered and licensed prior to sale.
You have to have a full car driving license to drive these vehicles. As long as you are licensed to drive a car, you will be able to drive one of these.
These vehicles are often insured through specialist insurers who understand the vehicles. They’re not on the average broker’s computer system drop down menus! Don’t worry, TukTuk UK can recommend some great brokers to use who understand the vehicles. It’s difficult to give an insurance estimate as everybody has different risks, but ours costs about £300/year fully comp.
These TukTuks have been approved for a driver and three passengers in the back. All the rear passengers have seat belts, but the driver is not required to have a seatbelt.
In theory, yes they can. However, it is up to your local authority to issue a private hire license for all vehicles operating as a taxi. I’d recommend you speak to your local authority for further information. Tuk Tuk UK will help as much as possible.
